Jam Roll and Eccles Cake
Thanks to national Historian Colin Walker for the source information for this post.
In 1929 Scouts around the world gathered in England for the 3rd World Jamboree in Liverpool. 1929 was also the year King George V appointed B.P, as a Baron – Lord Baden Powell of Gilwell.
Back to the story: It was decided to set up a collection to buy B.P. a memorable present as thanks for launching Scouts. Scouts from each country attending the Jamboree contributed 1d (1 old penny, that's less than 1/2p) each. Reluctantly, B.P. accepted a replacement car as a gift, as his old one was unreliable - it even broke down on the way to the Jamboree. The collection funded a new Rolls Royce (hence Jam Roll) and an Eccles caravan (hence Eccles Cake). They were presented to B.P. at the Jamboree in Liverpool.
Oh yes, the entire gift included Jam Roll, Eccles Cake and a pair of braces! And before you ask - I don't know what happened to the braces!
